Chapter 13

Timmy

“Just tell me this one thing and I’ll stop asking—what went down with you and my dad?”

Whitty won’t lay off with the personal questions. “Dude, if Cole wanted you to know the details, he’d answer your calls.”

“But now I’m asking you, Haley.” He drops his head and tugs at his mop of brown curls.

For the past two days, Whitty has been lingering by my desk at work—pleading and whining and begging me to tell him what went wrong between his father and his reluctant, temporary roommate.

All that matters is the result: I left Cole—the guy who, according to Whitty, is way too old and mature for me. The guy who I’m holding back from running his business to its fullest capacity. The guy who is better off without me.

Now he is without me. End of story.

I stand and head for the coffee machine against the office’s back wall. “We’re over—that’s all you need to know. And isn’t this what you’ve been pushing for? Maybe you should just shut the fuck up and enjoy it. You’ve got your father all to yourself now.” I pour a cup of coffee and return to my desk. “Now take a hike, or I will.”

Whitty retreats to his desk, his tail between his legs. He knows what I said is true: I was a big problem because I stood in the way of him getting his father’s undivided attention. And now I’m out of the picture. He got what he wanted. The dude should be kissing my ass.

My cell phone rings and for an instant I fight the hope that it’s Cole, calling to tell me he was wrong and misses me more than words can express. And he wants me to come home this very minute.

“Timmy here,” I say when I answer the phone.

“Hey, Timmy. It’s Jared.”

“Oh, hi.”

“Just confirming our appointment tomorrow.”

“Ten in the morning. At your Soho salon. I have the address.”

“Good man.”

How does he always manage to sound so cool and collected? “Don’t forget the booze. Modeling is so far out of my comfort zone I can’t even see it from where I stand.”

“Would I forget something so vital to the success of my project?” he asks.

“I guess not.”

“Looking forward to tomorrow.”

I don’t return the sentiment. I rarely lie, and the truth is that I’m dreading tomorrow. “See ya, Dexter.”

Ah, it’s finally five o’clock. I need to get the hell out of this office and into a bar before Whitty starts up with his interrogation again. When he gets called into Danny’s office, I slip out from behind my desk, grab my overcoat from the hook on the wall, and make my escape.

My goal is not to sober up until after my photo shoot tomorrow morning.
